Sole Man takes a single mate

It was back in 2015 when Brian Gavigan, Buffalo’s youngest shoemaker, opened the only man on Elmwood Avenue. Since then, Gavigan has built up loyal customers, mostly men. But he had plenty of female customers who came to repair his shoes. “They always ask me when I’m going to start selling women’s shoes,” Gavigan told me. “I always thought it would be like opening a Pandora’s box, because the styles of shoes and boots are changing so fast – there are so many styles, brands … how can I keep up with the changes?”

During the pandemic, Gavigan learned that the salon in his building was closed. Although his personal business certainly didn’t “grow,” he felt it was an opportunity he had to jump on. “Yes, in the midst of a pandemic, I decided to expand instead of cutting,” he said. “Shoes will be connected – Sole Mate will be a natural Sole Man. Sole Mate will focus on women’s classic with a focus on quality. We have new and refurbished high heels, flats … motorcycles, riding boots and winter and everything in between. , as well as accessories. Usually we also serve shoes and leather goods. I want the women’s shop to be very welcoming, with a similar lounge where customers can get a coffee or a glass of wine – a place to sit and relax. It. there will be a family room, a powder room and even a porch. It will be a shop where women can find classic and modern brands. ”

Ultimately, Gavigan owes much of Sole Man’s continued success and ability to start a new business to his loyal customers who have supported him since the beginning of time. “As a small business in the midst of a pandemic, I’m a little risky, but I knew I had to realize the opportunity at the same time.”

Gavigan predicts that the Sole Mate will open on December 21, in the winter days.
